Scope and Content Tollhouse, Old Spey Bridge, Fochabers, Morayshire This tollhouse was built to collect dues from users of the adjacent bridge, designed by Thomas Telford, and completed in 1806. The house is on the west side of the bridge, and because it adjoins the abutment has a basement. This view shows the house from the south east. The low-pitched roof with its prominent eaves is characteristic of many of Telford' tollhouses. The cornices over the windows and doors are unusually ornamental. The old bridge was bypassed c1970, and with it the tollhouse. Since 1976 the house has been much enlarged to the rear, and is now again a dwelling house. Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges were abolished in the 1880s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
