Scope and Content Bridge of Banff, Banffshire This is an important seven-span road bridge, designed as part of the policies of Duff House and to provide a suitable approach to the county town of Banff. It was designed by John Smeaton and widened in 1881 by John Willet of Aberdeen. This view shows the bridge from the south east, The original Smeaton arches can be seen set back from Willet's larger-span widening. The elegant profile of the bridge is Smeaton's. John Smeaton, father of modern civil engineering, is best known as designer of the first stone Eddystone Lighthouse. He was responsible for four bridges in Scotland. Apart from Banff these are at Perth, Coldstream and at Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
