Date 22/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 508111

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tollhouse, East Side Bridge, Turriff, Aberdeenshire This tollhouse was built to collect tolls from traffic using the adjacent East Side Bridge. like it built in 1826. It is a small octagonal structure, Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges ended in the 1880s, and by 1976 the building was a base for anglers. This view shows the house as seen from the bridge. The door and windows are well-placed for the keeper to exact tolls from users. The road from Turriff to Aberchirder is on the right. Owing to increasing traffic this house fell out of use in the 1980s and became derelict. To allow the approach to the bridge to be improved it was moved back, carefully retaining its axial relationship to the bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
