Scope and Content Suspension bridge, Crathie, Aberdeenshire This bridge was built by J Justice Junior and Co of Dundee, with flat link main suspension chains and diagonal iron-rod bracing chains. It was 'renewed' in c1885 by Blaikie Brothers, Aberdeen, at the expense of Queen Victoria. This view shows the carriageway of the bridge looking north. The flat-link and iron rod chains are clearly visible, as is one of the wrought-iron pylons. The bridge was bypassed for road traffic in 1855 and has since been a footbridge. This is one of three surviving Justice bridges, the others being at Kirkton of Glenisla, Angus and Haughs of Drimmie, Perthshire. Queen Victoria used it when she first came to Balmoral, but had a more robust bridge constructed nearby in 1855. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
