Scope and Content Clairinsh, Loch Lomond The area of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park contains a rich variety of archaeological sites and historic landscapes, which continue to have a major impact on the environment today. The island of Clairinsh on the east side of Loch Lomond was a seat of Clan Buchanan during the medieval period. There is a ruined settlement at the north end of the island but, despite excavations in 1935, this remains undated. In the medieval period several clans used islands on Loch Lomond or the lochs of the Trossachs as secure bases. In more peaceful times island settlements became unnecessary, inconvenient even, and were abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
