Scope and Content Detail of specimen block, Wester Hailes Park, Wester Hailes, Edinburgh Wester Hailes Park, situated near to Hailesland Primary School, was approved for construction in 1970. It formed part of a group of seven nine-storeyed slab blocks which contained 516 flats in total. They were demolished c.1994. This photograph shows the entrance to one of the slab blocks. A concrete awning highlights the doorway. Ventilation blocks on the stairs let light and air into the communal area. The harling is peeling away revealing the brickwork beneath. Some areas of relatively modern housing are demolished when it is decided that the buildings are uneconomic to renovate. Sometimes an area's social problems are made worse by the specific type of housing found there, and new developments are constructed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
