Scope and Content Nos 8 and 10 St Bernard's Row, Stockbridge, Edinburgh St Bernard's Row was the name given c.1817 to a terrace of new houses built along the west side of an old road which led along the Water of Leith to a ford, and then across the river to Canonmills. Nos 8 and 10, part of a two-storeyed terrace built c.1820 on the west side of the street, have neat little gardens fronting the narrow street. They have elegantly panelled doorpieces (No 10 with an oval), and graceful fanlights. St Bernard's Row was named after part of the estate of Deanhaugh. The name comes from the unlikely legend that St Bernard, on a mission to the Scottish court, received such a cold reception that he had to take refuge in a cave nearby.
