Scope and Content Tipperty Tile Works, Aberdeenshire This was one the last drainage-tile works in Scotland. It was founded before 1860, but largely re-equipped in the early 20th century. It had four round downdraught kilns, enclosed in a brick building. This view shows pipes, which have been extruded and cut to length, stacked for drying, on a perforated floor above one of the kilns. They will then be fired. The progress of drying can be seen in the lighter pipes in the lower row. The works closed in 1980, and most of the buildings demolished. Clay drainage tiles were superseded by continuous perforated flexible plastic equivalents, which were less labour-intensive to lay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
