Scope and Content Tipperty Tile Works, Aberdeenshire This was one the last drainage-tile works in Scotland. It was founded before 1860, but largely re-equipped in the early 20th century. It had four round downdraught kilns, enclosed in a brick building. This view shows the two-cylinder horizontal diesel engine which powered the cable-worked railway which linked the clay pit to the works. It was made by Ruston and Hornsby of Lincoln. The works closed in 1980, and most of the buildings demolished. The 0.60m-gauge cable-worked railway linking it to the clay pit was the last of its kind to operate in the north of Scotland.
