Scope and Content Tipperty Tile Works, Aberdeenshire This was one the last drainage-tile works in Scotland. It was founded before 1860, but largely re-equipped in the early 20th century. It had four round downdraught kilns, enclosed in a brick building. This view shows one of the wagons used on the cable-worked railway which linked the clay pit to the works, full of clay. The wire rope which will haul it can be seen passing over the clay. The door on the right-hand end opens for tipping. The works closed in 1980, and most of the buildings demolished. The 0.60m-gauge cable-worked railway linking it to the clay pit was powered by a Ruston and Hornsby horizontal diesel engine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
