Scope and Content Harbour light, Johnshaven Harbour, Morayshire Johnshaven Harbour was rebuilt in 1884, when the older harbour formed by two rubble piers was extended by the construction of a mass-concrete basin, to which the old harbour formed an entrance basin. This light may date from the extension. This view shows the light from the south. It had a lead-covered lantern supported on timber posts, with a ladder to give access to the lamp. The raking shore seen here may be a later addition. This light was replaced by a modern electric one on a steel pole in the 1980s. The old lamp was a unique structure, of great character. The 1884 extension was prompted by the boom in herring fishing which took place in the early 1880s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
