Scuride Ness, West Beacon General View

SC 504410

Description Scuride Ness, West Beacon General View

Date 18/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 504410

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Beacons, Scurdie Ness, Angus These two beacons, or daymarks for navigators, are at the point where the river South Esk enters the North Sea, and were provided to guide the masters of vessels entering the port of Montrose. This view shows the shorter and higher of the two beacons. As can be seen, it is rubble-built, and was rendered and painted white. Unlike its neighbour it has a flat top, and is significantly smaller in scale. Daymarks as old as this are rare, and these appear to be the only surviving pair in Scotland. How they were used in navigation is not clear from the shore. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
