Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 504406

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Inchbrayock Viaduct, Montrose, Angus This viaduct is unusual for Scotland in being built of brick. It was constructed for the North British Railway as part of the line from Arbroath to Kinnaber Junction, north of Montrose, built in connection with the opening of the Tay Bridge. This view shows the viaduct from the south east. It has 17 spans, and carries a single line of railway. It was designed by Sir Thomas Bouch, engineer for the first Tay Bridge, whose masonry and brick viaducts were both conventional and sound. The line of which this was a part allowed the North British Railway to reach Aberdeen. The next viaduct to the north was however rebuilt before opening, as it was similar in construction to the first Tay Bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
