Scope and Content Bowed truss bridge, Craigeassie, Angus This is a steel bowed-truss bridge over the river South Esk, possibly built in connection with the construction of the Glencoull Distillery in 1897. The bridge was built by the Motherwell Bridge and Engineering Co Ltd. This view shows the bridge from the south. It has castellated ashlar abutments, and lattice railings. Note the substantial under-deck bracing, in place of links between the tops of the trusses. Bowed trusses first became popular in Scotland in about 1860, initially for railway bridges. Several large road bridges of the type were built in the 1890s. This one may have been designed by Crouch and Hogg of Glasgow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
