Scope and Content View from south-east of Ashbrook, No 492 Ferry Road, Edinburgh Ashbrook is a large, Italianate villa built in 1869. Designed by architect Robert Raeburn (1819-88), it stands in its own gardens, with its service wing largely intact to the east (right). It is now in use as a Church of Scotland Eventide Home. This photograph shows the villa with its central three-stage tower, with cast iron balustrade, balcony and weathervane finial. The windows are mostly variations on an arch, with elaborate details, and form bay windows on the left side of the house. Large 19th-century villas like this are often too expensive and spacious to be used as individual dwellings anymore. They are often converted for use as hotels, nursing homes or divided up into flats or offices. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
