Scope and Content East side of St Vincent Street, Edinburgh, looking towards St Stephen's Church St Vincent Street, a short street leading downhill from the end of Great King Street, is dominated by the massive structure of St Stephen's Church at its northern end. Building started in the street in 1821, with tenements that step down the hill. These plain-fronted tenements, relieved by the occasional cast iron balconet, are faced with smooth ashlar, with bevelled joints between the horizontal ashlar blocks at ground-floor level. The basements have plain street railings. St Stephen's Church, at the end of St Vincent Street, was designed by Playfair and completed in 1828. Described as 'of vast scale, Baroque power and Grecian severity', it is square in plan and set diagonally to suit the site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
