Great King Street Detail of window from South

Description Great King Street Detail of window from South

Catalogue Number SC 502931

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of C 2211

Scope and Content First-floor window, No 87 Great King Street, Edinburgh Great King Street, designed by Robert Reid in 1804 as the grand central avenue of the northern New Town, links Royal Circus and Drummond Place, which enclose it at either end. Feuing began in 1812, and was completed 1814-23. This six-pane sash window on the drawing-room floor of the house has a moulded ledge (cornice) above, and a very low window sill forming a continuous course running across the width of the first floor. The sash window, used widely throughout Edinburgh's New Town, consists of a pair of glazed sashes which slide vertically in a case. In conjunction with internal timber shutters, this efficient design is well suited to combat Edinburgh's climate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
