Scope and Content Balconets, No 83 Great King Street, Edinburgh Great King Street, designed by Robert Reid in 1804 as the grand central avenue of the northern New Town, links Royal Circus and Drummond Place, which enclose it at either end. Feuing began in 1812, and was completed 1814-23. This end pavilion has elegant cast iron balconets on the three windows of a second-floor flat. The end pavilions were built as double main door flats, with single flats above, entered by a common stair. The stair windows are on the right. Balconets, small railings fronting windows one and sometimes two floors above street level, became very popular in the late Georgian period. They were installed when the house was built, and provided a light and stylish miniature balcony. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
