Scope and Content Great King Street, Edinburgh, looking east to Drummond Place Great King Street, designed by Robert Reid in 1804 as the central avenue of the northern New Town, links Royal Circus and Drummond Place which enclose it at either end. Feuing began in 1812, and was completed 1814-23. Great King Street was built as four identical palace-fronted terraces, each with a central block and end pavilions one storey higher than the rest of the street. The roadway is surfaced with small granite paving blocks (setts). Great King Street was, like George Street in the First New Town, named after King George III, and built as a principal thoroughfare. Accordingly, it was made wider than other streets, allowing horse-drawn carriages to do effortless three-point turns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
