Scope and Content Police Call Box, Heriot Row, Edinburgh Heriot Row is an elegant south-facing terrace overlooking the wooded gardens of Queen Street. Designed by Robert Reid in 1802-3 as two sections, divided by Howe Street, it was the first street to be built in the northern New Town. This rectangular, cast iron gabled kiosk stands on the Queen Street Gardens side of Heriot Row. Designed in a Classical style by the City Architect, Ebenezer James MacRae c.1935, it has a Saltire glazing pattern on each small window. Police call boxes, although no longer in use, are found at strategic points throughout the city. Designed before the advent of police radios, they contained a sink, telephone and first-aid box, and served as a point of contact for policemen on the beat. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
