Scope and Content Railings on the north side of Queen Street Gardens, Edinburgh Queen Street Gardens, with their mature trees, shrubs and walkways, were landscaped on sloping ground between Queen Street, the northern terrace of the first New Town, and Heriot Row and Abercromby Place, the southern boundary of the northern New Town. These railings, with spiked finials (the top part of the railings), form the northern boundary of the gardens with Abercromby Place. The curve of the street allows the gardens to widen here, and be seen to best advantage. In 1824 the gardens were enclosed by railings by Walter Dinn, and laid out by the landscape painter, Andrew Wilson (1780-1848), with trees, shrubs, and lawns as pleasure grounds for the residents of Queen Street, Heriot Row and Abercromby Place.
