Scope and Content 'Doctor's knocker', No 10 Heriot Row, Edinburgh Heriot Row is an elegant south-facing terrace overlooking the wooded gardens of Queen Street. Designed by Robert Reid in 1802-3 as two sections, divided by Howe Street, it was the first street to be built in the northern New Town. This door knocker, nicknamed a 'doctor's knocker', is a typical example of door furniture from the period 1800-30, when knockers were made in a wide variety of designs in brass for the street door. Originally only doctors' houses had door knockers; other houses and flats had bells. Door knockers were introduced later as decorative items of street door furniture made in brass or, for the basement door, in iron. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
