Scope and Content Part of Huntingtower Bleachworks The clean soft water of the river Almond was used by a number of large linen-bleaching fields from the 18th century. Huntingtower was one of these, originally a croft bleaching works, where cloth was spread on fields to be bleached by the sun. This view shows the core of the complex as latterly existing, seen from the lade which powered the works and provided process water. The clock tower dated from 1866. This was the last of the Almond valley bleachworks to close, which it did in 1982. Latterly it was processing cotton rather than linen cloth. The last works in the area was at Luncarty, and closed in the late 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
