Millhaugh Bridge View from W showing W front

SC 502501

Description Millhaugh Bridge View from W showing W front

Date 14/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 502501

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Bridge of Ardittie This is a single-span masonry bridge, with a large, almost semicircular arch and a pronounced hump. It spans the river Almond, and is now by-passed. This view shows the bridge from the west. The scale of the single arch is striking, as is the slenderness of its appearance. Note the circular recesses containing obelisks, a feature of the work of Alexander Stevens. The size of this arch is unusual, and the style somewhat dated; semicircular spans, with the pronounced hump they often entail, being difficult for wheeled vehicles. However the construction is very refined, and it may be a Stevens design. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
