Scope and Content Ironstone mine building, Lecht, Banffshire This building was built in connection with metal mining in this remote area. Its precise function is not clear, but it appears to have been a winding house. It is a rectangular structure built of massive rubble, built into a hillside. This view shows the axle-hole for what seems to have been an overshot wheel on the left gable, about 1.06 by 7.32m. It was probably reversible, with two sets of buckets facing in different directions, driving an internal winding drum. The scale rule is marked in inches. The axle hole is aligned with a larger arched opening on the opposite gable, in which the other bearing of the winding drum may have been set. The function of the drum is by no means clear, nor is the date of building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
