Scope and Content Ironstone mine building, Lecht, Banffshire This building was built in connection with metal mining in this remote area. Its precise function is not clear, but it appears to have been a winding house. It is a rectangular structure built of massive rubble, built into a hillside. This view shows the building from the south west. There appears to have been an overshot wheel on the left gable, about 1.06 by 7.32m. It was probably reversible, with two sets of buckets facing in different directions, driving an internal winding drum. The use of waterwheels of this type in mining is documented, but not here. The wheel was supplied with water by a long lade running along the hillside above the building, and then on a wooden launder at right angles to the gable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
