Scope and Content Carron Bridge, Morayshire This is a combined road/rail bridge over the river Spey, built for the Strathspey Railway by McKinnon and Co, Aberdeen. The engineer was Joseph Mitchell. It has a long cast-iron central span flanked by single segmental masonry flood arches. This view shows the bridge from the north, the road side, with the three-rib cast iron main span and the eastern flood-relief arch. There are three ribs in the main span, each cast in seven parts. This was the last railway bridge in Scotland to be made of cast iron. The railway closed finally in 1968, though its part of the deck was still separate in the 1970s.
