Scope and Content Chinese Bridge, Taymouth Castle, Perthshire The first bridge on this site was a timber one, in Chinese style, built before 1754. It was rebuilt in the early 19th century with Tudor Gothic cast-iron arches, possibly on the earlier piers, retaining the name of its predecessor. This view shows the pointed Tudor arches of the cast iron spans, and the matching railings. The rubble piers, with their triangular cutwaters, look earlier than the 19th century. The bridge was built to give access from Taymouth Castle to that part of the park to the north of the river Tay. When the estate was split up in the 1920s the bridge lost that function, and fell into decay. Its wooden deck has been replaced since 1976. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
