Scope and Content Taymouth Estate gas works, Kenmore, Perthshire This works was built to supply gas to Taymouth Castle and to the estate village of Kenmore. It was dressed up to look like a farm steading, and was mistaken for one by the author in 1976. This view shows the front of the works from the north west. The chimney served the retort house, which appears to have been to its right, in the wing with the louvred ventilator. The chimney originally had cast iron ornament like that at the home farm. Private gas works were not uncommon on large estates, but this is the only one given such architectural emphasis, and prominence of setting. It is now within the ground of a caravan park, and continuing to decay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
