Description Kenmore Bridge View from SSE showing WSW front

Date 7/6/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 500347

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Kenmore Bridge, Perthshire This three-span bridge was designed by John Baxter, and takes account of development in scientific bridge design during the 18th century. It has slender piers, with arched cutwaters, and the spandrels are pierced to reduce the weight of the bridge. This oblique view shows the arched cutwaters and the holes in the spandrels of the bridge, as well as the moulded course round the arch rings, the keystones in the arches, and the string course at the base of the parapet, all refined details. The sophistication of this bridge is due to its location within the designed landscape of Taymouth Castle, one of the earliest extensive landscaping schemes in Scotland.
