Scope and Content Former horizontal corn mill, Clashnessie This was a horizontal corn mill, rubble-built, and probably originally thatched. The walls were reasonably intact, and there were three millstones still in the building. This view shows the mill in its landscape, with the stream which drove it. The line of stones on the left marks the watercourse which supplied water to the wheel through the hole in the wall. Mills of this type were rare in mainland Scotland, but common in Shetland and on Lewis. The small horizontal wheel drove the top stone of the mill directly. Each mill could produce enough meal for a few families. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
