Scope and Content Warehouse, Ullapool Ullapool was established as a fishing station by the British Fishery Society in 1788, This warehouse was probably built by them as a curing house for herring. It was on the waterfront beside the original pier. This view shows the building from the east. As a curing house it would probably have accommodated a cooperage for making herring barrels, storage for empty and filled barrels and for salt, an expensive commodity in 18th century Scotland. Ullapool has since 1973 been the mainland end of the vehicular ferry service to Stornoway. This building has now been shortened and converted as a facility for passengers on this service.
