Scope and Content White Bridge, Inverness-shire This bridge was built as part of the military road along the south side of Loch Ness, built to link the forts at Inverness and Fort Augustus constructed after the Jacobite rising of 1715. It was built under the supervision of General Wade. This view shows the bridge from the west. The semicircular arch and pronounced hump are typical of military road bridges, which were designed primarily for marching troops, rather than vehicular traffic. This bridge was too narrow for motor traffic, and was bypassed in the 1930s. The replacement reinforced-concrete bridge was faced with masonry, in the manner of the time, to respect its setting.
