Scope and Content Bona Lighthouse, Lochend, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This lighthouse is at the entrance to the river Ness from Loch Ness. At this point the river is part of the Caledonian Canal. For many years there was a small-boat ferry across the Ness at this point. This view shows the bow-fronted ferry-house and lighthouse building from the south east. The light is shown from the small projection on the left side of the bow. The ramped quay was built for the ferry service. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
