Scope and Content Muirtown locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This flight of four locks is arranged as a staircase, that is, the top gates of one lock are also the bottom gates of the one above. It is situated near the eastern end of the canal, adjacent to Muirtown basin. This view shows the quay at the top of the flight, where there is a warehouse and hand-powered post crane. The crane has a cast iron frame and wooden jib The ship was the Maureen Mhor, a large motor yacht. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
