Scope and Content Muirtown locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire, Highland This flight of four locks is arranged as a staircase, that is, the top gates of one lock are also the bottom gates of the one above. It is situated near the eastern end of the canal, adjacent to Muirtown basin. This view shows the bottom of the flight, with the lock-keepers' cottages to the right, and part of Glenmhor Distillery on the left. The vessel is the 'Gate Lifter III', used for lifting lock gates for repair. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
