Scope and Content Muirtown Basin, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This basin was designed as a canal port for Inverness, and as a holding point for vessels waiting to leave by the sea-lock or to ascend the Muirtown flight of locks. This view shows the north-east side of the basin, with the broad wharf used by vessels trading with Inverness. The warehouses behind the wharf belonged to Glenalbyn Distillery. This was rebuilt in 1884. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
