Description Smigel Mill View from ENE showing NNE and ESE fronts

Date 29/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 498630

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Smigel Mill, Sutherland, Highland This was a water-powered corn mill on a rectangular plan, built into a bank. It is orthodox in its built form, but mechanically unusual, with a three-ring overshot wheel 1.22,by 3.71m with a rim gear, driving the mill through an external pinion. This view shows the mill from the upstream side, with the kiln on the right with its pyramid-roofed ventilator Note that the building is roofed with stone slates, probably from Caithess. This mill is said to have been built as a co-operative venture by local farmers in about 1850. The present arrangement of the wheel and gearing is probably late 19th or early 20th century in date.
