Smigel Mill View from SW showing waterwheel

SC 498625

Description Smigel Mill View from SW showing waterwheel

Date 29/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 498625

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Smigel Mill, Sutherland, Highland This was a water-powered corn mill on a rectangular plan, built into a bank. It is orthodox in its built form, but mechanically unusual, with a three-ring overshot wheel 1.22,by 3.71m with a rim gear, driving the mill through an external pinion. This view shows the wheel, with its three rings, an unusual feature, and its rim drive to the pinion on the left. It seems likel that the original wheel drove the mill directly on the axis of the pinion. This mill is said to have been built as a co-operative venture by local farmers in about 1850. The present arrangement of the wheel and gearing is probably late 19th or early 20th century in date. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
