Scope and Content Limeworks, Ard Neackie, Loch Erribol, Sutherland, Highland This limeworks was constructed as part of the Sutherland Estate improvements of the mid 19th century. It is situated on a peninsula projecting into Loch Erribol, and has a bank of four single-draw kilns, and pier for importing fuel and exporting lime. This view shows the top of the right-hand pair of kilns, showing the brick lining of the nearer shaft. Note the top courses are built of stone, as they were not subject to the same degree of heat as the lining further down. The lime made here was mainly for agricultural purposes, and was distributed mainly by sea. There was another limeworks on Eilean Choraidh, in the middle of Loch Erribol.
