Oldshore More, Corn Mill View from NE showing axle of wheel

Description Oldshore More, Corn Mill View from NE showing axle of wheel

Date 28/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 498505

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former water-powered corn mill, Oldshoremore, Highland This was a water-powered corn mill on a rectangular plan with a single pair of stones, powered by a waterwheel 0.71 by 3.7m. The mill was rubble-built of large stones with small pinnings. It had a kiln towards one end, with a granary beyond. This view shows the square-section cast iron axle of the waterwheel, with the remains of one of the hubs and two of the wooden spokes. The wheel was probably overshot. Note the massive stones and tiny pinnings in the wall. Mills of this type are characteristic of the north west highlands, with their relatively sparse populations and poor communications.
