Aultbea, Aird Point, Pier General View

SC 498192

Description Aultbea, Aird Point, Pier General View

Date 27/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 498192

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Piers, Aultbea, Highland There are two piers here. The smaller and older is a narrow rubble structure, with a later concrete surface, and the more modern is a large steamer pier with a concrete landward end and a wood and steel piled head. This view shows the rubble pier in the foreground, with the steamer pier behind it. The steamer pier is unusually large, and may date from World War II, when Loch Ewe was used as an assembly point for Atlantic convoys. These piers are now used solely by small inshore fishing boats.
