Scope and Content Fort, Black Hill, Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire This multi-period fort lies on the crest of the SE spur of Black Hill. The latest element of the defences is a stone-walled enclosure, which lies within an earlier rampart and ditch. Outside the latter an arc of palisade trench can be seen on the S. Seen from the N, this aerial view shows the fort under a light dusting of snow. The walled enclosure can be seen within the interior, its far side overlain by a circular sheepfold. The palisade trench lies outside the ditch on the far left side. Large numbers of forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC and some, as here, reveal evidence that they were preceded by timber-built enclosures. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
