Charlestown, Gairloch Pier, Hand Crane General View

SC 496193

Description Charlestown, Gairloch Pier, Hand Crane General View

Date 26/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 496193

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Hand crane, harbour, Charlestown, Highland This harbour has been developed in stages, the oldest part being an L-plan squared-rubble quay and pier built on to a rocky headland. There is a two-storey rubble storehouse on the quay which may have been built as a herring-curing house. This view shows a small cast and wrought-iron hand crane used for discharging catches from fishing boats. The crane was portable. And could be used where a suitable socket in the quay was provided. Charlestown is the port for the whole Gairloch area, a relatively densely populated part of Wester Ross. Until road transport took over there was a regular steamer service from the south. It is now a fish-landing port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
