Date 26/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content Pier, Diabaig ,This pier is built on to a rocky promontory, and is approached by a causeway protected by drystone rubble walls. The masonry pierhead is designed to accommodate small steamers, and is fitted with timber rubbing strakes. This view shows the pier from the north east. Note the well-finished masonry of the pierhead, with its rubbing-strakes, and the flight of steps on the inner end, for access to small boats. The boulders in the foreground may be from an earlier pier. The nature and scale of this pier suggest that it was built for trade and communication rather than for fishing. It is in a very remote location, and until motor transport developed shipping must have been essential to the area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
