Scope and Content Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, Highalnd council area This lighthouse was designed by Alan Stevenson for the Northern Lighthouse Board. It is a tall circular-section tapering ashlar tower. with the gallery carried on arched corbelling. The flat-roofed keepers' houses have Stevenson's Egyptian detailing. This view shows the lighthouse tower, behind the keepers' houses. Note the elegant arched corbel course supporting the gallery, and the Egyptian features in the design of the keepers' houses, a characteristic feature of Alan Stevenson's work. This light is on the furthest west point of the British mainland. It is one of the finest works of a great master of lighthouse design. Because it is unpainted the full beauty of its ashlar construction can be appreciated. It has now been automated. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
