Strontian Lead Mines View of mineshaft

SC 495819

Description Strontian Lead Mines View of mineshaft

Date 25/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 495819

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lead mines, Strontian, Highland council area The lead mines in the Strontian area were exploited from the 17th century until the 19th century, and the surface remains are scattered over a wide area. They include remains of rubble buildings, waste heaps and shafts. This view shows an open shaft on a vein. Note it irregular shape, which follows the course of the lead ore. Such workings did not have winding gear, ore being removed in baskets carried up ladders. One of the minerals encountered here was named strontianite in 1791, and from it the metal strontium was isolated in 1808 by Sir Humphrey Davy. Strontium compounds turn flames red, and are used in fireworks for that purpose. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
