Scope and Content Lead mines, Strontian, Highland The lead mines in the Strontian area were exploited from the 17th century until the 19th century, and the surface remains are scattered over a wide area. They include remains of rubble buildings, waste heaps and shafts. This view shows a series of waste heaps on the line of a vein of lead ore. The ore was generally in narrow veins, so the surrounding rock had to be removed to extract the ore. One of the minerals encountered here was named strontianite, and from it the metal strontium was isolated in 1808 by Sir Humphrey Davy. Strontium compounds turn flames red, and are used in fireworks for that purpose. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
