Scope and Content The Martello Tower, Leith Docks, Edinburgh Martello Towers were built during the Napoleonic Wars, at the start of the 19th century. They were designed to provide protection for shipping, in this case for the traffic entering Leith Harbour. Originally this tower stood on an offshore skerry. The design of the tower provided ground-floor accommodation for the gunners, and there were deep foundations providing space for stores and magazines. The gun emplacements were in the open on the top floor. Like many early defences this tower has been altered during more recent wars to serve the needs of modern artillery.
