Scope and Content Old Town Well, High Street, Edinburgh The Old Town of Edinburgh had ten small cisterns or wells. This example still stands outside John Knox's House on the High Street. The water for these cisterns came originally from up by the Castle, the Castlehill Reservoir, which is no longer in use. The Castlehill Reservoir was built in 1849 to replace an earlier, smaller reservoir. Water came from four springs at Comiston, and one at Swanston, and it was piped in elm wood pipes to the Old Town. With all the tenements and closes, the Old Town had a large population, and managing a good quality supply of fresh water was crucial. As the houses and flats did not have piped water, people could come to the wells and fill their vessels for home use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
